Guarding Against Lost Data By Registry Cleaning

Foreword By The Editor

Anyone who is familiar with computers will be well aware of the existance of the registry in their machine. It is the database, sometimes called the brain of the computer, and holds all the details of everything that is entered in the machine’s operating system (O.S.), plus a lot more. Registry cleaners are software then, specifically designed for the Microsoft Windows OS, to clear blockages and to keep it running smoothly.

With the huge amount of information a computer holds, it follows that it can easily incur problems if not cleaned regularly. There are a number of things that can cause these problems such as broken links, missing references, invalid entries and so on.

Problems And Solutions

Problems encountered with the registry can include such things as system crashes, errors in operation and/or the computer suddenly ‘freezing up’. This causes not only an interruption in one’s work momentum but a feeling of frustration, especially in the event of a complete breakdown of the system. Being in the middle of important work and suddenly finding oneself confronted by a blank screen can be a soul-destroying experience for anyone.

Fortunately, there is now software available to clear up many of the problems that can occur with the computer’s registry. This software is specifically designed to examine all parts of the database and remove any broken links, previous software remains and other things that should not be there. When using this type of software one should carefully read and follow the directions on the package.

Choices

The average user of a computer knows very little about the inner working of his/her machine. When something goes wrong, the first thing most people tend to do is to call a technician who is an expert in the field. Many times, after an examination, he or she will use this software to clear up the problem. But there is an easier, and usually less expensive, option available.

Admittedly, choosing the correct cleaner for one’s registry can be difficult. It is important to have the unwanted items removed but, at the same time, one does not want to lose something that might be valuable. Having a cleaner that makes a backup of the removed items before any changes were made is very important. With this backup, anything that was removed can be restored.

Summary

Some people have tried cleaning their machine of these problems by using a number of other methods. With the complicated components of modern computers though, this can often lead to more problems instead of solutions. Having software that one can simply install in the machine is faster and should do the job more thoroughly.

Due to the amount of information one puts into one’s personal computer, especially in the corporate environment, it is essential that such data not be lost. Replacing lost material can take many hours and in some cases might be impossible to put back altogether. Sometimes an expert in the field can recover some or all of the data, but unfortunately not always, and it is very expensive. Registry cleaners are constructed to make things easier for you.

Yorkshire Building Society broke Data Protection Act

Yorkshire Building Society has tightened up security after an unencrypted laptop was stolen, putting personal details of thousands of customers at risk.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) found that the loss of the laptop was a breach of the Data Protection Act

It was stolen on 19 April from the offices of the Chelsea building society, which had been taken over by the Yorkshire just days before.

The laptop, which had been used by an employee who was working from home, had been left under a desk at the Chelsea’s head office in Cheltenham.

In what seems like an open invitation to a thief, it was in a bag together with a list of passwords.

The computer was recovered two days later, when forensic examination found that the thief had made several attempts to access the data but had been unsuccessful.

The ICO criticized the building society for leaving an unencrypted laptop unsecured, especially with details of its passwords, and also said that allowing an employee to take home more data than needed was an unnecessary risk.

The Yorkshire said it was in the process of extending its own, more stringent security procedures to the Chelsea when the theft took place.

It now requires all laptops at the Chelsea to be encrypted.

Earlier this year research firm IDC forecast that the mobile workforce will pass the 1 billion mark this year meaning that the potential for data loss is immense.

Yet while most employees wouldn’t dream of leaving the office safe wide open, the message doesn’t seem to have registered that data theft is potentially even more damaging.

Roxio Creator 2011 released with 3D in mind

Roxio has announced the launch of Creator 2011, a digital media suite which the company claims is the first in the world to allow users to work on 3D projects.

If you want to turn that video of your kid’s birthday party into the next Avatar – maybe on a slightly smaller scale, and with more cakes and jelly – then this is the package for you. It boasts a feature set which encompasses capturing, editing and creating 3D photos and videos, and then sharing them with your nearest and dearest.

Simple 2D photos and home videos can have the 3D wand waved over them to transform into three dimensional content which Roxio claims is “amazing”, no less. And a pair of anaglyph glasses are included in the retail box, so you can enjoy the effects on your monitor even if you have nothing in the way of 3D hardware.

Footage captured from 3D devices such as the dual-lens camcorders which are now coming onto the market can be imported into the suite, with emerging 3D formats supported.

It’s possible to create your own tailored production, including special effects, title pages, transition cuts and so forth, along with adding a sound track. The resultant masterpiece can be output to your 3DTV, or indeed uploaded direct to YouTube.

Steve Shannon, Executive VP of RealD Consumer Electronics, commented: “Today’s digital 3D has forever changed cinema and we share Roxio’s belief that it will also have a dramatic impact on the small screen. We welcome this opportunity to partner with Roxio in fuelling the 3D consumer electronics market by delivering cinema-quality 3D experiences to the home.”

As well as the new 3D features, Roxio Creator contains a full and enhanced complement of video, music, photo and authoring applications. A range of tools to help speed up and simplify video creation and conversion is included, along with the new Roxio Streamer, which turns a home PC into a media server.

The product is out now on the Roxio web store, and will hit retail shelves early in September, priced at £50. The Pro version of the suite weighs in at £70, and is capable of Blu-ray authoring.

Yahoo! now powered by Bing in US

The results of a 10-year deal struck last year between Microsoft and Yahoo! are now started to take effect.

Microsoft’s Bing search engine now powers Yahoo search results in the US and Canada, with other countries expected to follow soon.

Bing is designed to organize search results so that the user can make quicker and more informed decisions.

As well as Bing, the deal also allows Yahoo! to use Microsoft’s AdCenter advertising platform, with this transition expected to be implemented this autumn.

The collaboration between Microsoft and Yahoo! will help the two companies in their offensive against search giant Google.

Last month Yahoo! made a slight gain on Google, which lost 0.4% of the search market leaving it with a 65.8% share, while Yahoo’s share increased from 16.7% in June to 17.1% in July.

Bing remained in third place with an 11% share.
