The New Internet Security Threats

 Foreword By The Editor

In this article by Louise Goldstein, a number of important security issues related to the modern Internet, or Web 2.0, as it is commonly known nowadays, are brought into focus. Modern technology is incredibly complex but is now in general use everywhere and its ubiquity is part of the problem. The bad guys are still out there and they are finding ever more ways to attack us. Vigilance has never been more important than now.

The Modern Internet

Image via Wikipedia

The Internet has given birth to a lot of new possibilities. It is a worldwide marketplace, a communication gateway, a networking venue, and a lot more. However, it has also opened us up to new dangers: viruses, trojans, and many other kinds of Internet malware are all over cyberspace, ready to launch an attack on whoever is vulnerable.

The first line of defense is knowing the enemy. So take a look at these latest Internet security threats. You just might meet one of them one of these days.

Scareware

Malware today are often disguised as anti-virus software and anti-spyware. Take, for instance, Vista Spyware 2011, Windows Restore, and Microsoft Security Center 2011. These software pretend to scan your computer then pretend to find viruses and registry problems and other stuff that should scare you into paying for the software to clean up your computer. (That’s why they are called scareware: because they scare you).

But in truth, the viruses and registry issues were never there in the first place, so you end up spending money to fix troubles your computer never really had.

LizaMoon

This is another scareware that is causing problems for millions of Internet users.

As of March 31, 2011, this malware has been found crawling on more than 500,000 web sites and has shown to be one of the most rapidly spread virus attacks in Internet history. What is worse, this virus not only tricks you into paying for basically useless software, it has also been reported to drain its victims’ credit cards.

Mobile Phones And Social Networks

Mobile phones and social networks are popular new targets for online attacks. Facebook and Twitter users are particularly vulnerable because the messages that contain malicious links come labeled with the names of people they know and trust, so they are more likely to click on these links.

URL Shorteners have also become common tools for driving people to malicious sites, as you never really know what you are clicking on until you reach the site in question.

Mobile phones are popular targets these days. After all, as Denis Maslennikov, a senior malware analyst at Kaspersky Lab, explains, “Any mobile device, be it a smartphone or a basic mobile phone, has a direct connection to its owner’s money via their mobile account”.

Router Attack

While you are worrying about the safety of your computer or your web site, by the way, you might want to worry about your router as well. Hackers who have become bored with taking down Web servers through traffic flooding are now shifting their attention to routers, taking advantage of the vulnerabilities of the Border Gateway Protocol to take servers down. Unfortunately, there is not as yet a quick-and-easy way to protect routers from hacking.

In addition to implementing tighter authentication processes, filtering direct traffic better, and getting tools to detect and trace attacks, ISPs and carriers need to band together and, as a group, implement a protocol that will tighten overall security. This will prevent hackers from infiltrating a secured ISP by tunneling through a trusted-but-less-secure ISP network.

Protecting Yourself

For most of us, the best and easiest way to protect ourselves online is by investing in good quality Internet protection software. If you are low risk, meaning you don’t download a lot of stuff and seldom click on links, you can survive on a free one and there are many good free anti-malware programs from reputable companies out there.

However, if you love to download files, be they movies, PDFs, and most especially, software, or if you like to click links on Twitter or Facebook, you should definitely invest in a good, paid Internet security software. Never trust pop-ups that claim to find more problems than your reputable antivirus has warned you about.

Malware may have grown more sophisticated these days, but anti-virus companies have likewise grown smarter. There is no reason why you should be out in the cold when it comes to online protection.

Web Site Search Engine Optimization

Foreword By The Editor

In this article, Daryl Campbell suggests three simple ways to achieve on-page search engine optimization (SEO) without having to dwell on the complexities that can sometimes be so easy to get bogged down in. For more information on this subject, as well as others in the field of Internet marketing, go to the last paragraph (About The Author) and follow the links there.

Traffic

A graphical despiction of a very simple html d...

Image via Wikipedia

Say the words web site search engine optimization and many of us will reach for the extra strength Tylenol. The mountain of information you seemingly have to digest in order to improve your search engine ranking can be daunting.

So why do people study web site SEO like it’s the finals of a college exam? Because the overwhelming majority of their (and your) site traffic will come from search engines. Optimizing your web pages the correct way can increase the ranking of your website and bring you more targeted traffic from people who are willing to buy your product, sign up for your opt-in email list or take some other action. It also has the added bonus of increasing your link popularity since many other webmasters will be very anxious to exchange links with a high ranking site.

But do you really have to take a postgraduate course to learn SEO? Not necessarily. There are some basic tweaks that you can make right now to your web pages that have the potential to increase your search engine rank.

Keyword Search Terms

This is the reason eighty percent of your site traffic comes from search engines. If the Internet is the information superhighway then keyword search terms are the guide posts. Choosing the right ones can be a science all its own. Use the free overture keyword (keyword) research tool to find terms relevant to your site content that people are looking for. Higher search results mean more competition. There is plenty of profit to be made in utilizing keywords that get anywhere from 500 to 5000 searches per month. You should then compile a list and use these keywords on every page of your website including the title.

However don’t go overboard. Keyword stuffing is a no-no with the search engines. It reminds them too much of the many automatic website builders that scrape content from other sites and create web pages overloaded with keywords and little else. Keep focused on providing useful information and use the keyword search terms where relevant.

Meta Tag Optimization

Five years ago, I would have told you meta tag optimization was essential to your web page. Nowadays search engines rank the importance of meta tags very low. Some do not consider them at all. So why use them? Because even if they a make up a small part of a search engine’s ranking formula, that’s an extra advantage for you.

Meta tags are usually located at the top of a website. Just open your web page in a browser window, click view on your menu bar and then select source. This is the HTML version of the web page. You can also do this with FrontPage, Dreamweaver or any other web site building software. Find where it says ‘meta name= keywords content’ and place your keywords between the empty quotations. Do the same with ‘meta name = description’ and place a brief site description between the quotations. Meta tag optimization may have lost much of it’s importance but every little bit helps.

Web Site Content

If you want to know how to take some of the complexity out of web site SEO, this is it. I’m sure you have seen many a site with dazzling graphics and awesome multimedia slideshows. None of that means anything without good unique web site content. Have at least a minimum of 300 words per page. Also make sure your text is in HTML (which stands for Hypertext Markup Language). Don’t let this throw you. HTML is the way search engines read your web pages. If you want to learn HTML, I recommend Dave Kristula’s website at http://www.davesite.com. The main thing to focus on is writing quality useful web site content that will please your visitors as well as the search engines.

Summary

A good search engine ranking is important for any online business. While there is a lot to learn concerning website SEO, just start with the simple steps we mentioned above. Keep in mind that if you give any web site search engine precisely what they want, they in turn will reward you with more site traffic and customers ready to take a look at your offer.

PC Safety – Free Anti Virus Software

Foreword By The Editor

An article by Azwan Asmat outlining an experience he personally had with a well-known and popular anti-virus software program. It was not a pleasant experience and highlights a very interesting fact about paid versus free anti-virus software programs that really needs to be told.
Mike Alexander
Author of ‘Internet Traps, Ripoffs And Pitfalls

Malware logo Crystal 128.

Image via Wikipedia

The results of experiencing a virus, worm or Trojan horse getting into your computer is often devastating so exactly what do you need to do to defend yourself? There are lots of anti-virus software applications available online today and they are available to be downloaded instantly. There are various paid programs as well as a lot of free plans.

It is often believed a paid-for program is the superior choice because “we get what we pay for”. This is simply not always the case though and there are a number of very good cost-free anti-virus software applications available but you must make sure the program you decide to use is reputable and has good reviews.

In fact a while ago I was professionally using a commercially available anti-virus software program that is a very well known and popular system. However, under the ‘protection’ of this program I was infected by a trojan horse virus which had devastating results. There was absolutely no way that I could get rid of it except to have everything on my computer erased and have Windows reinstalled.

The anti-virus software that I was paying for didn’t pick up the virus during any scans.

Just before I deleted everything from the computer I saved my files and programs to disk. Once I got our computer back again from the retail outlet with Windows reinstalled I then downloaded a different anti-virus program… a free one this time. With this software installed I then proceeded to scan the data I had saved to disk with the new, free software program and this time it picked up the trojan horse virus on one of the documents.

Because of that dreadful experience, I now do not use a paid anti-virus program any more but only use the free version of a respected anti-virus vendor. As a result, I have not suffered any major infections at all since that time.

Viruses can have a devastating effect on your computer and the longer they are on your computer, the more painful those consequences. You can lose your entire files along with programs if you don’t have them backed up with a backup hard disk. You can lose business data, personal pictures and much more if one of these awful viruses acquires control of your laptop. Not only that but also you can unknowingly spread a virus to your friends and colleagues through emails.

It is critical that you have an anti-virus program installed on your personal computer and set to run regular scans. As there are several free anti-virus software programs readily available there is truly no reason for not getting one fitted. Keep your files, photos as well as your computer protected and mount an anti-virus software program currently.

Guarding Against Lost Data By Registry Cleaning

Foreword By The Editor

This article by Billy Duncan is a straightforward treatise on dealing with one of the commonest problems encountered by computer users (especially new ones): registry errors. Be sure to follow the links in his ‘bio’ at the end of the article if you have more than a passing interest in this topic.

Image via Wikipedia

Anyone who is familiar with computers will be well aware of the existance of the registry in their machine. It is the database, sometimes called the brain of the computer, and holds all the details of everything that is entered in the machine’s operating system (O.S.), plus a lot more. Registry cleaners are software then, specifically designed for the Microsoft Windows OS, to clear blockages and to keep it running smoothly.

With the huge amount of information a computer holds, it follows that it can easily incur problems if not cleaned regularly. There are a number of things that can cause these problems such as broken links, missing references, invalid entries and so on.

Problems And Solutions

Problems encountered with the registry can include such things as system crashes, errors in operation and/or the computer suddenly ‘freezing up’. This causes not only an interruption in one’s work momentum but a feeling of frustration, especially in the event of a complete breakdown of the system. Being in the middle of important work and suddenly finding oneself confronted by a blank screen can be a soul-destroying experience for anyone.

Fortunately, there is now software available to clear up many of the problems that can occur with the computer’s registry. This software is specifically designed to examine all parts of the database and remove any broken links, previous software remains and other things that should not be there. When using this type of software one should carefully read and follow the directions on the package.

Choices

The average user of a computer knows very little about the inner working of his/her machine. When something goes wrong, the first thing most people tend to do is to call a technician who is an expert in the field. Many times, after an examination, he or she will use this software to clear up the problem. But there is an easier, and usually less expensive, option available.

Admittedly, choosing the correct cleaner for one’s registry can be difficult. It is important to have the unwanted items removed but, at the same time, one does not want to lose something that might be valuable. Having a cleaner that makes a backup of the removed items before any changes were made is very important. With this backup, anything that was removed can be restored.

Summary

Some people have tried cleaning their machine of these problems by using a number of other methods. With the complicated components of modern computers though, this can often lead to more problems instead of solutions. Having software that one can simply install in the machine is faster and should do the job more thoroughly.

Due to the amount of information one puts into one’s personal computer, especially in the corporate environment, it is essential that such data not be lost. Replacing lost material can take many hours and in some cases might be impossible to put back altogether. Sometimes an expert in the field can recover some or all of the data, but unfortunately not always, and it is very expensive. Registry cleaners are constructed to make things easier for you.

About The Author

Find more details about the importance of registry cleaners and their benefits and advantages today! You can choose the best for you from the many registry cleaners reviewed now.

Website Traffic

Image via Wikipedia

An Internet marketer knows that website traffic is one of the most important aspects that can lead to the success of his campaigns. Traffic is the key to conversions, thus Internet marketers work hard to bring traffic to their sites. Yes, there are options to get paid traffic but these can be really costly. If you are an Internet marketer, focus on the ways you can bring in free traffic to your site. One of these ways is through the use of a viral traffic generator.

Internet marketing is a numbers game: the more people who get to see your website, the more likely it is for you to get conversions. Thus, you really have to put your effort into bringing in a lot of traffic minus the cost. There are free ways to generate traffic such as article writing, social bookmarking, and creating link wheels, but these just take so much time on your part.

Viral Traffic Generators

A viral traffic generator will help you generate free traffic to your site without having to work that hard for it. Basically, this is a great piece of software that will help you increase your site’s visitors. This particular software is also known as a traffic virus, however, it is unlike any virus that attacks your computer. What it actually does is help you up your search engine performance.

There are a lot of traffic generators today and it can be challenging to find the right one for your needs. Basically, you should evaluate a traffic generating program by its ability to get site hits; the more, the better. This is what they were designed to do so they must achieve this without any problem. You should also look for one that gives you the best value. Marketing can really balloon up your costs, therefore you should look at how this software will be able to lower it. Most software will only need you to install it and it will do all the work for you.

The importance of a viral traffic generator in the success of your Internet marketing campaigns is not to be missed. You may have excellent content in your site but if you don’t have traffic, you still won’t get conversions. By using this software, you are able to build much needed traffic for your success.

Converting Traffic

Using a viral traffic generator will not mean a lot however, if your site is not designed to be pleasing to your visitors. You want your visitors to keep coming back to your site, therefore you have to create one that has lots to offer to them. Fill it with relevant content and you’ll have an increasing number of new and repeat visitors in no time.

Because word of mouth is a valuable way to build traffic, you must set a goal to impress your present visitors. When they are impressed, they will spread the word about your site the moment they are able to. To keep their interest, give them the information that they want.

Maintaining Internet marketing campaigns can be hard work. Nevertheless, if you are able to lessen the work by using a viral traffic generator, you end up with more time to focus on starting new campaigns.

About The Author

If you’re a site owner or an Internet marketer, you know that traffic is essential to the success of your company. You should check out bringing in unpaid traffic. This is where viral advertising specifically a viral traffic generator can assist you.

Fight Back Against Adware And Spyware

Foreword By The Editor

The following article by Benjamin Williams is a brief overview of two of the most serious malware problems in existence today: adware and spyware. The reason they are almost always spoken of together is because, in the real world, they so often operate in tandem. Rarely will you discover one infection without the other. The reason is that originally spyware was used mainly to provide ‘market profile’ data to adware owners.

Symptoms

AntiSpyware
Image by Colin ZHU via Flickr

We are all familiar with spies and covert operations that exist in wartime or in politically tense regions. Now however, you can find spies and covert procedures taking over your own computer system as you use it to access the Internet.

Have you noticed a suspicious slowing down of your computer’s processing power without any particular reason? Are you sometimes bombarded with unsolicited pop-up ads that indiscriminately appear whether you are running a program or not? These are the symptoms to look out for and they may continue to happen despite checking your system, running your recently updated anti-virus program and/or running a diagnostics program on your computer. Unless you have a very efficient program to deal with it, you may not even be able to detect that the real problem in your system is the presence of adware and/or spyware.

Adware

Adware is often bundled with freeware or shareware and is unsolicited software that displays advertisements. Yes, sometimes things that seem to be too good to be true turn out to have unwanted invisible strings attached. Adware companies sometimes pay freeware or shareware creators to be able to access their programs and then prey on the unsuspecting individuals who download these programs. Adware causes unsolicited pop up advertisements to appear on your computer and, in severe cases, can cause them to pop up soon as you boot your system.

Spyware

The term ‘spyware’, on the other hand, refers to something more covert and usually undetected in your system until you run an anti-spyware program. Spyware is used exactly as its name implies; to spy on you. In relatively mild cases, it is used to track your Internet browsing habits so that it can report your preferences to a central database and build a marketing profile. What this means is that as you go about your normal Internet business, you are unwittingly under surveillance and your basic right to privacy is being impinged upon.

Malware Overview

What’s worse though, is that this malware (the term for virtually any kind of malevolent software) can take note of your keystrokes or take note of your credit card number or take note of other vital information on your PC that can be used to steal your identity or generally put your security at risk.

A recent study indicated that as many as nine out every ten computers are, or have been, infected with spyware or adware at some time. To make sure that you are not one of statistical majority, you need run an adware and spyware cleaner to detect unwanted security and privacy breaches within your system.

Remedies

Luckily, adware and spyware removal software is readily available and most will completely remove these unwanted programs from your computer. You must note however, that some adware and spyware programs are so intricately bundled within their parent programs that cleaning them out from your computer will disable the so-called ‘legitimate’ programs they infect. This consequence is nevertheless necessary to clean your computer of unwanted malware. You should choose a cleaner that can also work proactively also to prevent future installation of these types of nuisance.

Software for fighting adware and spyware works in the same way as anti-virus programs, except that they target adware and spyware. Considering the trouble that malware creators take to ensure that extracting installed adware and spyware from your computer system will be difficult, the adage about an ounce of prevention being worth more than a pound of cure applies in this situation. Be sure to install a reliable and secure adware and spyware cleaner in your system to remove existing security and privacy risks as well as preventing future hassles.

Tips On Dual Monitor Video Cards

Foreword By The Editor

The following article by Donna Jonston is all about choosing a suitable setup for installing dual monitors on your computer. As explained, it is a very simple process, provided you follow the correct procedure. Read her resource box (it’s the last paragraph, under the heading About The Author).

Image via Wikipedia

When you’re getting ready to buy a twin monitor video card for your personal computer, there are a few things that you have got to consider to get the right dual monitor video card. These steps are listed below and they’re going to help to get the right video card for 2 monitors.

Types Of Monitors

The first thing that you wish to do is to work out what kinds of monitors you’re going to be using, i.e. one CRT and one digital, 2 digital monitors, or 2 analog monitors.

Choose Your Card

The second thing that you need to do is to select a dual monitor video card that’s going to fit the monitors that you are using. For example, if you’re going with two analog, or one CRT and one digital, then you need a twin monitor video card that has either two VGA connectors or one VGA and one DVI-I connector. The DVI is used to fasten a digital monitor and the other one is used for attaching the CRT.

If you’re using both digital monitors, you need to get a card which has two of the DVI-I connectors. This card is one that is very flexible and will let you use any mixture of all monitor kinds.

Research

Once you have worked out what kind of dual monitor video card you’ll need to have, take a look at the different ‘buyer guides’ so that you get an idea of the versions, pricing, and features of the available cards. Getting an idea of what you can expect from a dual monitor video card will help you know what you are getting into.

Comparison Shop

Although you may have an idea of how much you’re going to spend on the card, that doesn’t suggest that you’ve got to spend that much. If you look around on the Internet for different prices, probabilities are that you are going to find some pretty good deals on the cards, especially around vacation times. There are websites that will compare the costs for you on items that you would like to buy, and there are sites that boast about selling electronics for less. So look around and do not pay the first price that you find for your card. You may find that it is cheaper somewhere else and you’re going to be disappointed that you did not wait.

Summing Up

It is not awfully hard to go buying a twin monitor video card. All you have got to do is to figure out what kind of monitors you are going to be using and then buy the right card for it accordingly. If you take your time and look around, you may even find the card that you’re looking for at a lower price than you were expecting to pay. So take it slow and research, and then look round to find the most competitive price. Using the Internet to comparison shop is your best bet.

This article by Brent Schumacher is an introduction to some of the basics of good cooking for those people who have a passion, or who want to develop their skills, for cooking gourmet food. A Touch Of Class

A cook sautees onions and peppers.
Image via Wikipedia

Good and famous chefs create gourmet foods with a touch of class and sophistication. This is why every dish served in a restaurant should  look elegant. Coming up with a delightful dish does not come easy. It will take a bit of time. And if you want to be able to come up with great-looking and great-tasting food, you need not be a chef yourself. As long as you know the basics of cooking, you can come up with your own gourmet food.

Cutting

Cutting is very important in cooking gourmet food. Chopping is a method that you can use if you want randomly small sized ingredients, which is perfect for onions, tomatoes, etc. Dicing is the smaller version that you may do, like slicing your potatoes into cubes. Garlic deserves mincing, ending in very small pieces. But regardless of what method you prefer, you have to be careful with the knife that you are using.

Sauteing

Now after all those ingredients are ready, you can now saute them. Sauteing is the process of cooking something quickly. A small amount of oil is used over direct heat while tossing all the spices and other ingredients altogether. Easy, isn’t it?

Breading

Breading is another method used in cooking gourmet foods. Surprisingly, a lot of people still don’t know how to complete this process without getting all messy. The technique here is to have one hand soaking the meat in liquid while the other is used to dip the meat into the crumbs. This technique will not get your fingers sticky and messy.

Grilling

Grilling makes for healthy cooking. Since you won’t be needing to fry food using cooking oil, you avoid taking in fat.

Before you grill your food, it is better to have it marinated hours before you cook it. This is the process where you add flavors to your food. This will help make chicken, meat, and even fish more flavorful. Soak your food in a marinade solution for a period of time and put it in the refrigerator.

Pastas

And how can you forget pastas? Have you ever heard of the term al dente? Sounds Italian right? You can tell if your pasta is already al dente if you can feel a slight resistance once you bite it. If you’ve achieved that, it means that your pasta has just cooked perfectly; in other words, not too soggy and not too crisp.

Summary

You can try these techniques if you have a passion for cooking gourmet foods. By taking into consideration these points, you are giving yourself a good start. Eventually, you will learn more advanced ways of cooking. Begin embracing the basics of cooking now and leave becoming the next Iron Chef till later.

Tools For The Job

Registry-cleaning programs are getting more and more popular these days, and for good reason. They’re a crucial tool for repairing computers. As a computer repairman, I personally use a registry cleaner in four out of five house calls! There are a lot of different reasons for this, and I’ll tell you the major ones here.

Probably the topmost reason is that I know they enhance the system’s overall performance. Many computers have some errors during start-up or shut down. Not all of them necessarily show up as errors though.

Causes Of Common Errors

One of the most common reasons for these types of errors is uninstalled start-up programs. The computer expects it to be run on start-up but it doesn’t exist anymore. However, the registry still thinks it does and still calls for it. Sometimes it can just be as simple as a wrong file path. A nice easy scan with a registry cleaner will fix these kinds of problems without much trouble, and I usually wipe out those little things before I even start getting to any major problems with a computer.

More Tools

In many scenarios, registry cleaners do not just act just as registry cleaners but also contain many other tools in them. For instance, nearly all registry cleaners contain a missing or broken links verifier. It is a fact that missing links on the computer can increase the boot time, thereby making it sluggish, even though many people are not aware of it. Also in the event that you attempt to open a folder that contains broken link then the computer would be too slow in opening that folder.

This also applies to start-up managers. Although computer geeks would make use of ‘msconfig’, if you do not have a fair idea about it then it may cause great problems for you. Registry cleaners are expert at completing this process and most of them do not even show up the important Windows start-up files so that you do not commit a mistake.

Most registry cleaners also contain a junk file remover tool to remove all the sites, cookies, photos, pictures and many other types of data saved to your computer on different parts of the hard drive. Getting rid of such files would definitely enhance the speed of the computer and show a significant improvement in its performance. Even though Windows has a junk file cleaning tool internally built into it, it is not unfortunately very effective.

Summary

Take all those features into account and you’d be crazy not to have a decent registry-cleaning program on hand to run when you need it. It’s just so convenient, why would you ever want to be without it? It can save you a chunky repair bill, and a great deal of stress.
