The New Internet Security Threats

 Foreword By The Editor

In this article by Louise Goldstein, a number of important security issues related to the modern Internet, or Web 2.0, as it is commonly known nowadays, are brought into focus. Modern technology is incredibly complex but is now in general use everywhere and its ubiquity is part of the problem. The bad guys are still out there and they are finding ever more ways to attack us. Vigilance has never been more important than now.

The Modern Internet

Malware logo Crystal 128.

Image via Wikipedia

The Internet has given birth to a lot of new possibilities. It is a worldwide marketplace, a communication gateway, a networking venue, and a lot more. However, it has also opened us up to new dangers: viruses, trojans, and many other kinds of Internet malware are all over cyberspace, ready to launch an attack on whoever is vulnerable.

The first line of defense is knowing the enemy. So take a look at these latest Internet security threats. You just might meet one of them one of these days.

Scareware

Malware today are often disguised as anti-virus software and anti-spyware. Take, for instance, Vista Spyware 2011, Windows Restore, and Microsoft Security Center 2011. These software pretend to scan your computer then pretend to find viruses and registry problems and other stuff that should scare you into paying for the software to clean up your computer. (That’s why they are called scareware: because they scare you).

But in truth, the viruses and registry issues were never there in the first place, so you end up spending money to fix troubles your computer never really had.

LizaMoon

This is another scareware that is causing problems for millions of Internet users.

As of March 31, 2011, this malware has been found crawling on more than 500,000 web sites and has shown to be one of the most rapidly spread virus attacks in Internet history. What is worse, this virus not only tricks you into paying for basically useless software, it has also been reported to drain its victims’ credit cards.

Mobile Phones And Social Networks

Mobile phones and social networks are popular new targets for online attacks. Facebook and Twitter users are particularly vulnerable because the messages that contain malicious links come labeled with the names of people they know and trust, so they are more likely to click on these links.

URL Shorteners have also become common tools for driving people to malicious sites, as you never really know what you are clicking on until you reach the site in question.

Mobile phones are popular targets these days. After all, as Denis Maslennikov, a senior malware analyst at Kaspersky Lab, explains, “Any mobile device, be it a smartphone or a basic mobile phone, has a direct connection to its owner’s money via their mobile account”.

Router Attack

While you are worrying about the safety of your computer or your web site, by the way, you might want to worry about your router as well. Hackers who have become bored with taking down Web servers through traffic flooding are now shifting their attention to routers, taking advantage of the vulnerabilities of the Border Gateway Protocol to take servers down. Unfortunately, there is not as yet a quick-and-easy way to protect routers from hacking.

In addition to implementing tighter authentication processes, filtering direct traffic better, and getting tools to detect and trace attacks, ISPs and carriers need to band together and, as a group, implement a protocol that will tighten overall security. This will prevent hackers from infiltrating a secured ISP by tunneling through a trusted-but-less-secure ISP network.

Protecting Yourself

For most of us, the best and easiest way to protect ourselves online is by investing in good quality Internet protection software. If you are low risk, meaning you don’t download a lot of stuff and seldom click on links, you can survive on a free one and there are many good free anti-malware programs from reputable companies out there.

However, if you love to download files, be they movies, PDFs, and most especially, software, or if you like to click links on Twitter or Facebook, you should definitely invest in a good, paid Internet security software. Never trust pop-ups that claim to find more problems than your reputable antivirus has warned you about.

Malware may have grown more sophisticated these days, but anti-virus companies have likewise grown smarter. There is no reason why you should be out in the cold when it comes to online protection.

Web Site Search Engine Optimization

Foreword By The Editor

In this article, Daryl Campbell suggests three simple ways to achieve on-page search engine optimization (SEO) without having to dwell on the complexities that can sometimes be so easy to get bogged down in. Traffic

A graphical despiction of a very simple html d...

Image via Wikipedia

Say the words web site search engine optimization and many of us will reach for the extra strength Tylenol. The mountain of information you seemingly have to digest in order to improve your search engine ranking can be daunting.

So why do people study web site SEO like it’s the finals of a college exam? Because the overwhelming majority of their (and your) site traffic will come from search engines. Optimizing your web pages the correct way can increase the ranking of your website and bring you more targeted traffic from people who are willing to buy your product, sign up for your opt-in email list or take some other action. It also has the added bonus of increasing your link popularity since many other webmasters will be very anxious to exchange links with a high ranking site.

But do you really have to take a postgraduate course to learn SEO? Not necessarily. There are some basic tweaks that you can make right now to your web pages that have the potential to increase your search engine rank.

Keyword Search Terms

This is the reason eighty percent of your site traffic comes from search engines. If the Internet is the information superhighway then keyword search terms are the guide posts. Choosing the right ones can be a science all its own. Use the free overture keyword (keyword) research tool to find terms relevant to your site content that people are looking for. Higher search results mean more competition. There is plenty of profit to be made in utilizing keywords that get anywhere from 500 to 5000 searches per month. You should then compile a list and use these keywords on every page of your website including the title.

However don’t go overboard. Keyword stuffing is a no-no with the search engines. It reminds them too much of the many automatic website builders that scrape content from other sites and create web pages overloaded with keywords and little else. Keep focused on providing useful information and use the keyword search terms where relevant.

Meta Tag Optimization

Five years ago, I would have told you meta tag optimization was essential to your web page. Nowadays search engines rank the importance of meta tags very low. Some do not consider them at all. So why use them? Because even if they a make up a small part of a search engine’s ranking formula, that’s an extra advantage for you.

Meta tags are usually located at the top of a website. Just open your web page in a browser window, click view on your menu bar and then select source. This is the HTML version of the web page. You can also do this with FrontPage, Dreamweaver or any other web site building software. Find where it says ‘meta name= keywords content’ and place your keywords between the empty quotations. Do the same with ‘meta name = description’ and place a brief site description between the quotations. Meta tag optimization may have lost much of it’s importance but every little bit helps.

Web Site Content

If you want to know how to take some of the complexity out of web site SEO, this is it. I’m sure you have seen many a site with dazzling graphics and awesome multimedia slideshows. None of that means anything without good unique web site content. Have at least a minimum of 300 words per page. Also make sure your text is in HTML (which stands for Hypertext Markup Language). Don’t let this throw you. HTML is the way search engines read your web pages. If you want to learn HTML, I recommend Dave Kristula’s website at http://www.davesite.com. The main thing to focus on is writing quality useful web site content that will please your visitors as well as the search engines.

Summary

A good search engine ranking is important for any online business. While there is a lot to learn concerning website SEO, just start with the simple steps we mentioned above. Keep in mind that if you give any web site search engine precisely what they want, they in turn will reward you with more site traffic and customers ready to take a look at your offer.

Merchant Secrets To Successful Affiliate Marketing

Foreword By The Editor

In this article by Nigel Canham, the area of affiliate marketing from the perspective of the merchant, is covered in some detail. There can be no doubt that affiliate marketing can be very profitable for merchants due to the fact that, in effect, it is a form of outsourcing. Nigel emphasizes that training and incentives are the keys to finding and motivating affiliates.
Mike Alexander
Author of ‘Internet Traps, Ripoffs And Pitfalls

Coaching, Tools And Support

For an affiliate marketing merchant, it is fair to say that success or otherwise hinges to an enormous extent upon the volume of traffic your affiliates manage to entice to your website and the subsequent sales you may achieve. Affiliate marketing programs have invariably been (and will carry on being) one of the most effective ways to produce traffic, accomplish better market share and so boost profits, but they must be used correctly. The primary requirement is a good understanding of just what motivates someone to become an affiliate marketer because, with this knowledge, you are going to be much better placed to make available a captivating package of coaching, tools and support. Done properly, this will quickly put your site at the cutting edge of whichever market you’re targeting.

It ought to be remembered that your affiliates will characterize your business’s presence online. To hire an affiliate who will not present your organization and its merchandise in the very best light possible is akin to throwing money away. A bad affiliate is actually not likely to affect your financial well-being, nor be a strain upon any essential resources, simply because they only earn money from the things they sell. Nevertheless, you could lose out on some important revenue streams by possibly not incorporating a few tried and tested techniques that could result in the merchant/affiliate relationship being a lot more mutually profitable.

What Affiliates Want

So what exactly is it that draws the would-be online marketer to becoming an affiliate to begin with? The reasons are numerous and varied but a few of the most immediately apparent are detailed below.

  • The affiliate marketer is answerable to no-one other than themselves and the principal merchant; they are their own personal supervisor and there are no deadlines to meet.
  • They will tend not to need to employ people or, if they do, it would usually be in the form of an outsourcing arrangement with free-lancers.
  • Truth be told there is often no need to lease premises or retain an office. An Internet business may be run effectively whether seated at a PC workstation at home or relaxing with a laptop at the beach.
  • If set up correctly, this form of e-commerce can often be operated with minimum attention for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
  • There is no need to commute. The whole of their business is no further away than their personal computer.
  • A good affiliate program may generate an extremely comfortable income through a quality product backed by high online commissions (over 50%).

These are only some of the good reasons people consider affiliate marketing. Being a merchant, you ought to endeavour to enter into the way of thinking of your affiliates and provide a support package which will both excite them and offer beneficial training, support and assistance. The probability is that you already acknowledge this need. Numerous affiliate merchants have previously trodden the path of the marketer. Should you be one of those, you likely have a good idea of what your affiliates need. The newbie affiliate will quickly find their initial foray into the realm of marketing quite daunting. It is a tough environment to negotiate without having some form of direction, which is why training can be so important.

Personal Characteristics

To become productive, affiliates have to possess certain qualities of character that can help them drive their business forward. Qualities like determination (the drive to never give up even if things appear to be going nowhere); willingness to learn inside an ever-evolving online scene; self-motivation (simply put, not being distracted by domestic or other non-work related pressures); self-discipline (the ability to work within a pre-defined time each day or until the day’s aims have been achieved); a positive attitude (needed to counter any negativity that arises from within themselves and/or from others).

Certainly, as an affiliate merchant, it is definitely not your task to instill these factors in your affiliates but you may help encourage them by adopting an optimistic attitude. By and large, a tiny amount of encouragement can sometimes uncover qualities that lie hidden just below the surface of the would-be marketer. This can be accomplished with a minimum of effort by putting in place a high quality system of training and assistance which will allow them to have the confidence to drive their business, and therefore yours, forward. This is a win-all state of affairs and one which can generate a good income for you as well your affiliate marketers.

The principle emphasis must be on the need for training and encouragement for your affiliates to try and do the most effective job they can to create traffic and market your products to the fullest extent possible. After a little thought and energy you might soon have large numbers of affiliates offering your products right across the World Wide Web for 365 days a year, using synchronised and well-planned campaigns which will leave you and them more than adequately rewarded.

The range of computer brands is extensive too and models are available from many well-known companies such as Lenovo, Compaq, Dell, Acer and HP not to mention many smaller manufacturers.

Some of the latest developments that continue to ensure that computers really are at the very cutting edge of technological innovation are Bluetooth, touchscreens and so on. Computer makers now compete to offer as wide a range of features as possible too, so it is relatively easy to find the colors, configurations, specifications and designs you really want.

PC Safety – Free Anti Virus Software

Foreword By The Editor

An article by Azwan Asmat outlining an experience he personally had with a well-known and popular anti-virus software program. It was not a pleasant experience and highlights a very interesting fact about paid versus free anti-virus software programs that really needs to be told.
Mike Alexander
Author of ‘Internet Traps, Ripoffs And Pitfalls

Malware logo Crystal 128.

Image via Wikipedia

The results of experiencing a virus, worm or Trojan horse getting into your computer is often devastating so exactly what do you need to do to defend yourself? There are lots of anti-virus software applications available online today and they are available to be downloaded instantly. There are various paid programs as well as a lot of free plans.

It is often believed a paid-for program is the superior choice because “we get what we pay for”. This is simply not always the case though and there are a number of very good cost-free anti-virus software applications available but you must make sure the program you decide to use is reputable and has good reviews.

In fact a while ago I was professionally using a commercially available anti-virus software program that is a very well known and popular system. However, under the ‘protection’ of this program I was infected by a trojan horse virus which had devastating results. There was absolutely no way that I could get rid of it except to have everything on my computer erased and have Windows reinstalled.

The anti-virus software that I was paying for didn’t pick up the virus during any scans.

Just before I deleted everything from the computer I saved my files and programs to disk. Once I got our computer back again from the retail outlet with Windows reinstalled I then downloaded a different anti-virus program… a free one this time. With this software installed I then proceeded to scan the data I had saved to disk with the new, free software program and this time it picked up the trojan horse virus on one of the documents.

Because of that dreadful experience, I now do not use a paid anti-virus program any more but only use the free version of a respected anti-virus vendor. As a result, I have not suffered any major infections at all since that time.

Viruses can have a devastating effect on your computer and the longer they are on your computer, the more painful those consequences. You can lose your entire files along with programs if you don’t have them backed up with a backup hard disk. You can lose business data, personal pictures and much more if one of these awful viruses acquires control of your laptop. Not only that but also you can unknowingly spread a virus to your friends and colleagues through emails.

It is critical that you have an anti-virus program installed on your personal computer and set to run regular scans. As there are several free anti-virus software programs readily available there is truly no reason for not getting one fitted. Keep your files, photos as well as your computer protected and mount an anti-virus software program currently.

Finding A Good Managed Server

Foreword By The Editor

This piece by Kevin Abrahams addresses the problem of how to choose a web hosting service from among the huge number that are now available on the Internet. As someone who works in the industry, he is able to offer sound advice about what to consider and what to expect while evaluating the market. Remember to take a look at the About The Author paragraph and follow his link there for further information.

Undeniable Fact

Multiple racks of servers, and how a data cent...

Image via Wikipedia

It is an undeniable fact that due to the extremely large number of different providers in the globally competitive market of web hosting, research and review has become an important tool to aid in finding a good managed server provider. What are the factors that should be given emphasis?

Examine

Examine the managed services offered such as Secured Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates that ensure a secured online monetary transaction. Is the provider able to incorporate shopping carts and online forms? Will the provider be able to provide database maintenance? How about file transfer services? Consider bandwidth, data transfer levels and maximum uptime. All of these are crucial to ensure the productivity of your website. These are also essential to maintain good daily traffic to your website.

IT Infrastructure

Consider the applications, equipment and tools utilized by the provider to deliver their hosting services. Are they able to keep up with the latest trends in web hosting services?

Technical Support

Assistance and support should back up the services provided. At all costs, a provider must be reachable 24 hours a day/seven times a week. All sorts of communication such as telephones, mobile phones and online means should be extended to the clients. The lack of support system may cause loss of clients.

Consider the cost of their services and the payment methods they accept. Is the fee reasonable enough for the bunch of services they offer? Will they be willing to accommodate your preferred payment method such as installments, credit cards, checks or bank-to-bank transfers?

Cost

This is also a crucial factor to evaluate when looking for a server provider. Carefully evaluate the services a provider offer and examine if the services are substantial for the price they offer. It would be a good practice to compare not only the prices of different providers, but their services as well.

Summary

Considering the above factors, you are on a feasible track towards finding the right managed server deal for you. Don’t just rely on what everyone else says. If you don’t feel comfortable enough with a provider, you can always set off and move to another provider.

How To Advertise On The Web

"Get fat on Lorings Fat-ten-u and corpula...

Image via Wikipedia

Foreword By The Editor

This article by Alex Wu is a short explanation of one of the most popular ways to advertize your business on  the World Wide Web. If you find it of interest, please show your appreciation by visiting the links provided in About The Author (the last paragraph).
Mike Alexander
Author of ‘Internet Traps, Ripoffs And Pitfalls

Advertising On The Web

It’s necessary to use the correct approach if you want your business’ website to be effective and efficient. The first thing that you need to do when advertising on the web is to find the most efficient ways to place your business advertisements so that you are rewarded with paying customers. Here are some of the best ways to do that.

Conversions

The objective of your business website is to convert potential customers into paying customers. To do this you should target your advertisements at the most appropriate audience. It’s absolutely necessary to keep track of your advertisements as well so that you can determine if they are getting sufficient attention. If they aren’t, you may need to re-analyze how your business is advertising. Your business advertisements need to be placed so that they will attract the attention of your business’s potential customers. You are simply wasting your time if you place them on just any website.

Customer Friendly

Once you have placed your business advertisement on the web, you should also use the advertisement as the signature for your communications. This way, whenever you send a message or an email, the backlink will be sent automatically to the other person and that will help to publicize your business. In addition, you should also send marketing emails and create a business database. The most important thing to remember is that, when you send these marketing emails, they should not look like a marketing strategy or an advertisement but rather be customer friendly. Your potential customers might want to consider sending a marketing email, but the potential customer may read it closely and resent it. If they do the potential customer may take his/her business elsewhere.

Following Up

There is an easy way to determine what type of audience has visited your business’ website looking for your business’s goods or services. Whenever somebody visits your business website, you should ask for sign-up forms. These potential customers have visited you because they are interested in the goods and services your business is offering for sale. Your potential customers may be diverted because there is such high competition but you need to follow up and get all of the details you can about your potential customers. Then you can advertise on the web. This will help your business convert potential customers into paying customers.

Summary

These are the most efficient and effective ways to advertise on the web. They offer the best chance of your business being successful. They are very easy to understand and are well worth using.

Five Copywriting Tips

Have desk, will write

Image by Bright Meadow via Flickr

Foreword By The Editor

The following article by Melissa Bowman covers five of the most important facets of copywriting that you need to learn if you write your own sales copy and want it to succeed. Good copywriters tend to charge like a mad bull which means that ordinary Joe or Jane Public running their own small Internet business have to do their own copywriting, at least initially. This article will help to keep you on track if you are one of them.
Mike Alexander
Author of ‘Internet Traps, Ripoffs And Pitfalls

Copywriting: Art Or Science?

There are a lot of people who do not understand something very basic about copywriting; it is art, but it is also science. It is possible to write an entire book devoted just to copywriting mistakes made by people who do not understand this fact. In this article we shall be looking into such mistakes and offering guideline tips to correct them.

Tip Number One

Most copywriters just beginning often make the blunder of putting all their effort into explaining what a great item the product or service is and what it can do. People don’t care about the products, however, they just want to know what’s in it for them. Prospects will only be interested in the benefits the product offers them and why it is necessary for them to buy it. It’s important to understand that there are lots of products on the market that are just like your product and they probably do the same things, too. That is why, if you want to steal the purchase away from those competing against you, you need to be very clear about what your prospects will get from the purchase. And it is why you will want to keep the features to a minimum and instead go into further detail about how your prospects will benefit. The best way to deal with this is to always follow a feature by its benefit when you write it. Copywriting is all about going after what the person wishes for most. You need to convey the message that your prospect’s problems are easily fixed and that you can provide the answers they seek. Nobody is interested in what great technological breakthroughs were used to create your product, they only care about how they will benefit from buying it. This is the number one rule you’ll always want to keep in mind.

Tip Number Two

Sales copy must be written with correct punctuation or else prospects and customers may not understand what you’re trying to tell them. Good copywriters can put certain words down, and in the right fashion, and they can convince their prospects that their products are needed, and thus the prospects are unable to turn the offer down. You might have a revolutionary new product that works wonders, but your product will only look as professional as your sales copy, and having bad copy likely won’t get you any sales. What is the extent of these mistakes? You may not believe it but some copywriters use a semi-colon when they’re supposed to use a comma. Having your sales copy ridden with these mistakes will not make a good impression on your prospect’s mind. You don’t have to sound like a sophisticated writer, but your punctuation needs to be perfect. When your grammar is correct, you will not only be looked upon as a professional businessperson, but your prospects will always understand the message you are trying to convey.

Tip Number Three

Another mistake lots of copywriters make is either not giving enough information that prospects really need to know, or giving too much away and not leaving enough for the product. It is a common thing for copywriters to struggle with how much information to provide in their sales copy and how much to keep to themselves. However, it is always important to give just the information the prospects need to make a decision, but you need to put in all the details that will let them know the benefits. It should be a healthy balance of both. For instance, if you are selling a tool that has to do with search engine optimization and it was made using visual basic, your prospects probably don’t care about that. However, if the product you’re selling improves their search engine placement, then that’s definitely worth putting into your sales copy. In simpler terms, make sure you give just enough away to make them want the product, but at the same time hold back other information so you have something for later. You may find that you need time to perfect this practice, but once you do you’ll definitely see your business grow. Always keep in mind that anyone reading your copy has already shown interest in what you’re offering so all they want is a little more information in order to make a good decision on whether or not to buy it.

Tip Number Four

You must ensure that people can read your copy and that it doesn’t confuse anyone. Make sure you’re using tons of white space in it and the paragraphs are small. Most people are just going to skim over what you’ve written so you need to make sure they can get your major points easily. The paragraphs that make up your copy should contain only a few sentences and focus on talking about one specific point. Also, your copy has to flow, so don’t divide your focus with your content or move away from your main topic. A good habit to get into that can help you write with flow is to write your copy just as you would tell a story. Doing it this way tends to make you write longer copy, so make sure you use bullets and short paragraphs to break things up for your prospects. When you can write copy that is readable and that catches the attention of your reader, then you’ll be more likely to sell more products.

Tip Number Five

You need to make sure you also avoid the mistake of not putting a P.S. at the foot of your letter. It doesn’t take much to write one, so don’t forget to always add one because it re-enforces the call to action. That is the most essential part, except for the headline.

Conclusion

You can really succeed in this business if you keep from making mistakes which only require that you ‘learn the ropes’ and then follow through with your plan.

ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2011 expands security with enhancements such as Early Boot Protection, which guards the computer during system start-up where other security products leave systems vulnerable, and Rootkit Protection in the OSFirewall, which blocks attacks targeting processes deep in the operating system.

Pros:  Antivirus updates often and is quite thorough. Easy to use, strong anti-spyware engine, many options for customizability, award winning firewall, blocks third party cookies, Web bugs and several other things.

Cons: Uses significant amount of resources, average antivirus, has too many firewall/program control alerts.

Summary

ZoneAlarm Security Suite 2011 is strong on defense. It has a tough firewall and keeps malware totally out of a clean system but it is less effective in cleaning up entrenched malware and some of its features are antiquated. ZoneAlarm is a fine choice, if you are willing to sacrifice resources. The products on Anti-Virus4U.com are under the highest standards, and tested by trusted names such: VB100, PC Magazine, West Coast Labs, and more…

 Kaspersky Internet Security 2011

Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 stops your PC being slowed down by cybercriminals and delivers unsurpassed online safety whilst protecting your files, music and photos from hackers.

Pros: Improved interface. “Safe Run” virtual environment protects against unwanted changes. Intelligent Application Control. Hardened against malware attacks. Improved spam filtering. Blocks exploits and leaks.

Cons:  Malware cleanup left behind many traces.  Slowed system performance somewhat. Anti-phishing module less effective.  Rudimentary parental controls, uses significant amount of resources, expensive.

Summary

Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 has everything you expect from a security suite and more. Its firewall is smart, and its “Safe Run” sandbox protects your system. It has a somewhat slow system performance. Pricey.

You can see my site ranking if you search for Consumer Wealth System review and I’ve been getting emails from people. They have a problem and it’s also one of many serious mistakes that beginners sometimes make when trying to make money online. It’s evident that many people don’t focus enough on a single course. They get tired of waiting for the profits to roll in and that’s not really good.

It is a brutal fact and most probably you have prematurely jumped from one method to the next yourself. You do nine methods one after another then throw your hands up before you’ve put in enough effort to see a profitable campaign result and you sell yourself short yet again by purchasing products you don’t really need.

Basic Skills

Most people (myself included) have gone through this sort of phase. There are many products that I’ve bought and membership programs that I joined unnecessarily. The frustration is just too much and I sometimes I have even quit when starting out. But when you take a close look at it, you only need some basic skills in order to start making money online. One very good technique is to write articles.

Check out the Consumer Wealth System and see how articles can be used to promote physical products. You can also use paid advertising methods but I would really avoid using Pay-Per-Click (PPC) even if you have money to spare. This article alone will save you thousands of dollars in the future. How? By discouraging you from purchasing expensive courses that otherwise you would probably buy this year but that you don’t really need.

Traffic Generation

This is where you have to be honest with yourself. You have to make a decision on what traffic generation techniques you should use. We’re all different and we’re going to have different results with every marketing technique that we use. Nobody can guarantee that a specific method will work for you because it will all depend on how you approach your work. If you don’t give up too easily and take consistent action then your success is just around the corner.

Are you looking to get rich quick? If your mindset is like that then it’s easy for the gurus to get your hard earned money. Now it’s going to be hard for you to put your trust in anyone again even though there are many good money-making online training courses available. Sometimes it takes me a lot of investigation before buying a course because I always want to make sure that I’m making the right decision.
