Day Two: Popup Exchanges

Overview
It is important not to get confused between what used to be known as popups and what we are considering here. Basically, there are two kinds: miniature popups and exit popunders.
Miniature Popups
These can further be sorted into two distinct types. The first are small, non-intrusive advertisements measuring an eighth of a page or less. They appear when the page is opened but don't completely cover up what the viewer might want to read and can be closed or moved out of the way easily. They also go by the names drop-in ads, slide-in ads etc. It goes without saying, of course, that they can only display advertisement headlines but, because of their small footprint plus the fact that they are impervious to most 'popup killers', they are very effective.
The second type are larger, though rarely more than a quarter page. They appear when the viewer's mouse pointer moves above the page headline (which usually means that he or she is about to close the window they've been reading). Consequently, they are sometimes known as exit popups. They are currently the most effective of all the popups, mainly because they are designed to appear only to those people who have decided to leave the page anyway. They are also not affected by popup killers.
Exit Popunders
So called because they open behind the main window and don't usually get to be seen until the viewer closes it. Most often, site visitors are not even aware of them having loaded until they close the original page they were viewing. Once again, there are two types: full page and miniature. Full page popunders are susceptible to popup killers but the one chosen for the FAT system is programmed so that only when your page actually appears will credits be used (n.b. so credits are not spent if the page gets blocked). Miniature popunders, on the other hand, are much less intrusive than full pages and, like miniature popups, are not affected by most popup blocking software.
Advertising With Popups
You should advertise your Target Page on popups and, since only you know what that is, I can't be very specific in helping you, except to say that you need to give due regard to the following time-honored principles:

Make sure your headline grabs attention.

Your copy should aim to get people to click the link that takes them to your Target Page.
Normally you would try to achieve this by attempting to stimulate curiosity in whatever you're promoting, or offering to solve a problem etc.
ExitExplosion
This exit popup perfectly complements the FAT system so you should devote a bit of time to it in order to get it right. The first thing you will need to do is create an ad to fit within the program's parameters, so make sure you understand their requirements first. Remember to make an entry for ExitExplosion in your fat_data.xls file (or whatever alternative you're using) and record there your advertisement as well as your login details, joining URL etc.
Instant Buzz
Instant Buzz is made up of a number of different components: i.e. Bar Ads, MailSpace Ads, and HyperSpace Ads, the latter of which is the name they use for their popup ads. They're not considered by everyone to be pop-up ads though so signing up and registering is a slightly more complex procedure than it would otherwise be (because of the number of options available) but it's well worth it.
Since you are looking at Instant Buzz, you might as well sign up for Bar Ads (otherwise known as toolbar ads) and Mailspace Ads (which are text ads that automatically attach to your outgoing emails) at the same time. Simply follow the instructions to set them up. Make sure you specify the FAT system as the target for your HyperSpace Ad though. The others are all optional but it is recommend that you also use at least one of them to advertise your FAT system. Click the link to join:
Once again, remember to make an entry in your spreadsheet file (or whatever alternative you're using) thus ensuring that your important data is all kept together. Record the ads you're using with the ancillary programs as well.
MyViralAds
These miniature popups allow you to choose between a single or double column version. Obviously, the larger earns more credits whereas the smaller is much less intrusive. If you use Firefox, you should choose one of the two latter ones which are marked accordingly and which also disable popup blockers and allow you to set a time pause before they appear. This program is starting to show it's age but it still does the job. Click the link to join:

SwishAds
The advertisement area for this miniature exit popunder measures 492 pixels wide by 214 pixels high and, remember, it opens behind the window that the viewer can see and only becomes apparent when he/she closes it. It can be plain text or HTML (a basic web editor is available to help), or even an image (such as a gif) can be uploaded if required. Click the link to join:
TrafficZap
This is a full page exit popunder, meaning that you can display any webpage you wish, no matter what size or length it is and (within reason) how long it takes to load. You may choose your main site home page, or a landing page etc. Try to avoid resource-heavy graphic rendering applications though, such as Flash. They just slow everything down and will not enhance your popularity with the average web surfer. The ratio of views to impressions is the usual 2:1. In other words, for every 2 hits it gets, your full page ad is shown once on another members site. Join by clicking the link:
